Modification of microwave generator, Model S6-F
Purpose of Modification:
This modification was
developed to alleviate the high costs associated with
the original YJ1191A magnetron tube. This tube
originally designed and manufactured in 1959 is still in
use today. Currently it is being manufactured soley by
Covimag in France, with limited quantities coming off
the production line. The cost of the YJ1191A has
steadily increased over the years and is now selling in
the $4500.00 to $5000.00 range. The standard warrantee
for this tube is 12 months or 2000 hours of filament
use, prorated. It has always been a very robust tube
performing exceptionally in the harsh industrial
environment. The only drawbacks have been the cost and
occasional availability problems due to one manufacturer.
We felt it prudent to
offer our customers an alternative by modifying the
microwave generator to accept a different magnetron
tube. Both the Covimag YJ1600 and Toshiba E3327 are
excellent choices for this endeavor. Each tube has the
same six kilowatt output power as the original, but at a
fraction of the cost. Typical prices range between
$2200.00 to $2800.00
with a warrantee of 5000 hours prorated. With two
separate manufactures for the same type tube
availability problems are minimized.
MES
Solution:
· Design
the modification economically and efficiently by
replacing only the needed components necessary for safe
operation of the new magnetron tube.
· Methodize
the modification into kit form and provide customers
with the alternative of performing the modification
using their own maintenance staff.
End
Result:
· Cost
savings of new magnetron.
· Longer
warrantee of new magnetron.
· Availability
problems are greatly reduced.
· Customers
with multiple generators on a system can perform the
modification one at a time. The YJ1191A magnetron
removed from the modified generator can be kept on the
shelf as a replacement for the other remaining
generators.
